In the southern portion of Almont, the Taylor River and the East River converge to form the mighty waters of the Gunnison River. The surplus of waterways has established the town as a fishing paradise, as well as Gunnison County’s recreational hub for whitewater rafting. First platted in 1881, Almont is largely defined by its surrounding rivers and bucolic lifestyle and is unhindered by large tourism crowds or commercial corridors.

Potential homeowners looking to Almont can expect to find sprawling lots — often more than 30 acres — ready for purchase and development. Homes already built typically reflect the area’s agrarian feel and are styled as posh mountain cabins and spacious ranch estates, which are sometimes tucked away in private communities or perched on hillsides.

Two all-season resorts bring in enough tourism to keep Almont dynamic and also serve as the area’s go-to for dining and entertainment.

For diverse retail and dining options, the residents of Almont can either travel north to Elk Avenue in Crested Butte or south to the bustling city of Gunnison, each just 15-minutes away. Together, the two towns carry an abundance of breweries, top-tier coffee cafes, global cuisine, and upscale boutiques able to supply the latest in fashion, home goods, and sporting gear.

Closer to home, locals depend on country-chic resort spots for dining. The historic Almont Resort was built in 1893. This relaxing retreat features riverside and fireside dining, as well as meals centered around classic American favorites and a sophisticated bar.

The Three Rivers Resort  — whose lodging includes both historic, turn-of-the-century cabins and renovated new builds — brags a general store, wedding and event venue, and a signature restaurant named the Three Rivers Smokehouse. Another ranch resort gem, Harmel’s Ranch Resort not only offers a slew of invigorating activities like whitewater rafting, horseback riding, rock climbing, and fly fishing, but also a vintage-style saloon bar and an on-site dining room.  

Things to Do

Like many of the communities within Gunnison Valley, Almont is well-known for its competitive sports and outdoor recreation — exemplified by the town’s full calendar of special events. The annual Caddis Cup, for instance, is equal parts fly fishing competition and community party spread out over a two-day span of great food and enticing prizes.

In spring, the Risers 4 Rett Fly Fishing Tournament invites attendees to experience an all-inclusive weekend of lodging, guided fishing, competition, prizes, food, and drinks through the purchase of tickets whose proceeds benefit the Rett Clinic at Colorado Children’s Hospital.

Camping is another popular Almont pastime that’s supported by the community’s plenitude of pristine campgrounds, including but not limited to One Mile, Granite Tent Campground, Rosy Lane, and Almont Campground. The town is additionally surrounded by ample national forest land, and residents are within easy reach of the magnificent Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests for endless hiking, fishing, biking, and exploring opportunities.
