Mt. Crested Butte

A premier skiing hotspot known for its extreme terrain and challenging courses.

Welcome to Mt. Crested Butte

An extreme skiing mecca outfitted with local friendliness, rugged terrain, and a trove of must-try sports

North of Crested Butte and tucked along the base of its eponymous mountain, the community of Mt. Crested Butte is an end-of-the-road ski destination and idyllic retreat backdropped by a striking 12,000-foot, white-capped summit. Jaw-dropping panoramic views abound throughout the entire year, whether the slopes are laden with glittering white powder or blankets of wildflowers and lush, verdant foliage.

The crown jewel of the community is the Crested Butte Mountain Resort, a premier skiing hotspot known for its extreme terrain and challenging courses. Considered the birthplace of inbounds extreme terrain and also featuring an invigorating mountain bike park, adventure junkies and sports enthusiasts can test their mettle to the fullest at this off-the-beaten-path gem.

With lavish condos adjacent to the ski lifts, majestic, single-family estates flanked by pines and mature aspen trees, and massive luxury ski lodges epitomizing the best of rustic glamor, the residential real estate of Mt. Crested Butte proves to be just as exciting as its bountiful mountain views, extreme sports, and small-town spirit.

What to Love

  • Tranquil retreat into nature
  • Mix of spacious condos and massive cabin estates
  • Living next door to some of the world’s toughest ski slopes

Local Lifestyle

A population under 1,000 means that Mt. Crested Butte locals can enjoy a quiet, rural lifestyle despite the area’s ski attractions. The area is a tight-knit community of daredevils and nature lovers who pursue luxury with passion — and who prefer living within walking distance of the slopes over a bustling commercial corridor.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

When it comes to fun, Mt. Crested Butte locals and visitors alike are in agreement. Sports, in all forms, rank as the top choice for entertainment in this upbeat community. The winter season sports include everything from backcountry, alpine, and nordic skiing to snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Summertime is a steady rotation of horseback riding, hiking, and hitting the trails of the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Park. Mt. Crested Butte also works hard to ensure that its menagerie of activities is accessible to all skill levels and needs, as evidenced by the presence of inclusive foundations such as the Adaptive Sports Center.

Though residents might need to venture south into Downtown Crested Butte to get their fill of retail therapy, they don’t need to leave their home base to enjoy a plentitude of great cuisine or grab the basics for a day-to-day luxury lifestyle. For cozy nights by the fire mixing at-home cocktails after a day on the slopes, Treasury Liquors & Deli offers a vast selection of premier spirits, wines, beers, and liquors in addition to made-to-order deli classics.

Coffee Lab is more than just incredible local roasts and specialty drinks — this community jewel is also a philanthropic supporter of science whose proceeds go to support the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. Iron Horse Tap pairs classic American pub fare with Colorado draft beers to create a satisfying night out. Uley’s Cabin sits at the bottom of Peanut Run and during the ski season offers diners a chance to take in slope views from comfy Adirondack chairs while digging into a menu of elevated rustic cuisine.

Things to Do

Mt. Crested Butte might be small in size, but its assortment of local events is just as impressive as any big tourism destination. The Chili & Beer Festival, for example, always draws in a crowd of hungry gastronomes hoping to sample the area’s finest homemade chilis and craft brews. The beloved annual Ski Town Breakdown adds music to the fun of springtime ski adventures via a month-long live music series in March, which is held at various slope-side venues.

Other events lean into the community’s sports-heavy personality, like the Al Johnson Memorial Telemark Race or the Living Journey’s Summit Hike & Half Marathon. The former event involves a 600-foot climb, 1,200-foot descent, and outrageous costumes, while both the Hike & Half Marathon test the mettle of even the truest of athletes with their challenging elevation changes and more than 11 miles of trail.
